                 In Me Miracled

Through countless years and myriad ways I’ve come:

a fish, I swam in the primordial sea;

with turtle claws I splashed through surf-caught foam,

and with new lungs climbed landward, with new cry.

How all earth’s bloods wash through my sea-swept veins

and swell my brotherhood a thousandfold

with all living things!  And huge untold designs

repeat their patterns in me, miracled.

When shall I dare to know them, touch my trace

in every flesh-bright being?  How dare I not,

Oh Dramatist, infinite of device,

whose meaning I would know in clear daylight.

Then ah! be Spirit too, lest this world grow

too dear, too near my essence’s overflow.
